United Methodist Women: A Definition

Women are organized into a community with a common understanding of themselves as disciples of Christ. As the organization's purpose indicates, the lifelong quest for an awareness of God through Jesus Christ is the core to the organization, coupled with the recognition that an integral part of living as fully as God has intended requires being a part of a creative, supportive fellowship--finding new ways of living together in community.

As women organized for mission, United Methodist Women are involved in mission activities and mission partnership ventures locally, in thousands of communities in every state of the United States and in over fifty countries around the world.

Over one million United Methodist women are committed to this same purpose: women who pray and are willing to take risks to live out those prayers, women who deal with issues of their day with Christian concern and commitment and women who take seriously both the opportunities and the obligations of discipleship.

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

Program topics range from contemporary and social issues to Bible studies and studies of local and worldwide missions. Through our programs, we can gain a better understanding of our roles as disciples of Christ.

Our activities are varied. They include such projects as cooking a monthly meal for St. Anthony's Home, quarterly trips to the women's prison to donate craft supplies and other specified items, participation in preparations for Church Nights, a monthly program and refreshments for a senior citizens group (Happy Hour), monthly contributions to the Food Pantry, Friendship Receptions for new members, annual retreats for our members and guests, and participation in the Annual School of Christian Mission. The Broadmoor UMW has been a leading innovator of fund-raising projects. Thousand of mission dollars have been raised through taste fairs.
